What is MP3? MP3 is a digital sound file. This sound file is like a .WAV but about 12 time smaller compressed into MP3 format. They vary in size, about 1 meg for every minute of music. So most mp3s are around 2-5 megs in size. This will take you about 40 minutes to download on a 56k modem and about 2 minutes on a cable modem. Digital music offers a variety of benefits over other media because it is portable and easier to distribute for the music artists. MP3s can be played on a variety of computerized devices including computers of all types and portable MP3 players.

MP3 stands for MPEG-1 Layer 3 and is a file standard for compressing audio files. Many sound files can be compressed to MP3 format and vice versa. The ability to play MP3 files simply requires an MP3 Player on your computer.

To Napster or not to Napster

Shawn Fanning, the college dropout who accidentally invented the single biggest threat to the global entertainment industry is now taking on the giants of the industry who think he is nothing but a lowdown net pirate, with his napster, a software that allows users to trade copyright music at no charge. He calls it sharing while they call it theft. Whatever it is legally, the genie is out of the bottle. With the proliferation of mp3 as  the most common music file downloaded, sharing files is here to stay.

The latest Napster v2 Beta7 is a sleek and functional software which is fun to use.

Playlists - A playlist is a piece of software that allows you to organize MP3 files adding increased functionality to your player. For example you can create your MP3 compilations by creating a playlist saving it to disk.

Are MP3s legal? Of course just like a text file is legal. Some people choose to do illegal things with it like breaking copyrights and distributing pirated music. You can find legal MP3s at MP3-2000, mp3.com, eMusic, and many other places According to federal law, the owner of a copyright on a piece of music retains exclusive reproduction and distribution rights. But consumers are allowed to sell or give away the single copy of each CD, tape or album they buy. The MP3 digital format -- which enables numerous, high-quality copies to be made and transmitted easily over the Internet -- has created uncertainty over parts of the copyright law. The rights remain intact in cyberspace, but it depends on where you keep your music. Keeping a copy of Britney Spears' hit single "Crazy'' in MP3 format on your computer hard drive is legal. Keeping that same MP3 file on your Web site server creates an instant avenue for the distribution of numerous copies, and is a violation.

How to Get Started with the MP3 business

Of course what you should do first is to get hold of an MP3 player. Some of the more popular players like Sonique, winAmp and Musicmatch jukebox are readily available in the internet. Once you have your player and are feeling comfortable with it, there are a vast number of add-ons that can enhance the MP3 experience.

Skins - These are basically a cosmetic cover for your player. Once added they change the appearance of its interface. There is some cool stuff out there.
